About
Dr. Sarah Messmer is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and Pediatrics, and is board-certified in addiction medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. She provides primary care for adults and children at UI Health, as well as low-threshold substance use disorder treatment on Chicago's West Side in a clinic developed within a longstanding syringe service program run by the UIC School of Public Health's Community Outreach Intervention Projects (COIP). She is co-PI and Clinical Lead of the COIP Mobile Medication Assisted Recovery (MAR) program, which provides primary care and substance use treatment via mobile van at overdose hot spots. Dr. Messmer's research interests include opioid use disorder treatment in low-barrier nontraditional settings, implementation science, community-engaged research, harm reduction, and developing curriculum to improve education on substance use for healthcare professionals.
