Novel Interventions to Address Addiction and Related Harms

The Institute will advance multiple avenues for intervention research that cover several addictive substances (e.g., opioids, nicotine, cannabis, etc.) as well as points along the continuum of use (prevention, preventing escalation, harm reduction, cessation, recovery, and relapse prevention). We will promote the use of novel technologies and approaches to advance clinical practice and addiction science.

Key areas of focus will include:

  1. Increasing treatment reach and transferability of interventions to help reduce the substance use treatment gaps that are especially apparent with disadvantaged populations
  2. Developing novel interventions that may include both pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches as well as technology-enhanced interventions and that may draw on neuroscience informed targets as well as social networks
  3. Improvements in treatment effectiveness with attention to increasing treatment participation and adherence.
