Elena Zheleva is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her research focuses on developing algorithms for automated causal inference from noisy, heterogeneous, and network data. It brings together machine learning, causal inference and graph mining, with applications in computational social science, ecommerce, health, and privacy. Dr. Zheleva has published research on using social media data to understand the effect of public policies on cannabis vaping behavior. She is the recipient of multiple federal and industry grants, including an NSF CAREER Award and an Adobe Data Science Research Award. Prior to joining UIC, she spent a few years in industry as a data scientist and a year as an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland College Park.
